What is trauma informed care

At Sanos Counselling Care we use a trauma-informed approach that is person-centred, safe, and kind. We recognise that difficult life experiences can deeply affect how you feel, think, behave, and relate to others.

Understanding trauma

Trauma occurs when something feels too much, too fast, or too unsafe for your system to cope with at the time. Trauma can come from many life experiences and can affect the nervous system, not just memories i.e.:

  • Abuse, neglect, or violence
  • Accidents, medical experiences
  • Exposure to a crime
  • Natural disasters
  • Grief & Loss
  • Ongoing stress or relationship harm
  • Intergenerational or cultural trauma

Many emotional and physical responses are normal reactions to overwhelming or unsafe experiences, and your unique responses are your system's way of coping with what you've been through.

Trauma affects everyone differently, but common responses can include/are not limited to:

  • Anxiety, fear, panic
  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed
  • Irritability, anger emotional outbursts
  • Numbness
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Trouble trusting others.
  • Shame, guilt, self-blame

These are protective responses from your nervous system.

What is trauma informed care

Trauma informed care is an approach that recognises the impact of trauma and prioritises safety, respect, choice, and collaboration. It avoids re traumatisation and centres your lived experience.

Instead of asking “What’s wrong with you?” Trauma informed care asks: “What happened to you, and how can we support you safely?”

What you can expect from trauma informed care

  • Safety: Emotional and physical safety are prioritised
  • Trust and Transparency: Clear and honest communication
  • Choice and Control: You are involved in decisions about your care.
  • Collaboration: Support is done with you, not to you
  • Cultural Respect: Care that respects culture, identity, and background.

Trauma informed care at Sanos

During a session, you can expect a calm, non-judgmental space where your comfort and control are prioritised. We will work collaboratively with you, focusing on building safety and understanding, and exploring strategies at your pace.

It's about empowering you to regain choice and connection, without pressure to relive difficult events before you are ready.

EMDR can provide an opportunity to work with trauma without re-living all memories thereof.
